Teachers at Oregon Hope Chinese School are native speakers who are well versed in Chinese culture. At the same time, they’re trained to teach in the “American style,” which encourages student participation, individual expression, and creativity.
Min Kong: School Director
Min has spent her entire adult life as an educator. She was trained in Changsha Early Childhood Teachers’ school and earned her BA in music education in China. She was a faculty member at Yiyang City University Music Department until she immigrated to the United States.
In 2005, she established Oregon Hope Chinese School with her colleagues. She developed the curriculum for the school. In addition to serving as School Director, Min also teaches the preschool, summer camp, and Saturday kindergarten and Chinese immersion classes. Min brings meaningful learning experience to her students by explaining the formation of Chinese characters through interesting stories and pictures, engaging students in fun and friendly learning environment. She gives her students great experiences performing at community culture celebration events.
Min is also a member of the National Music Teacher Association and Oregon Music Teacher Association. She engages her students in musical activities such as singing and instrumental playing to nurture student’s Chinese language tonality and rhythm. She is also a church pianist and piano instructor.
Cathy Chou
Chou laoshi was born in Taiwan. She earned her BA from Chung-Yuan Christian University from Chung-Li City, Taiwan. She moved to Portland with her husband who is an engineer at Intel. They have two children. Chou laoshi previously taught Chinese at Tze-Chi Academy grade 3 and 5. She also worked at a Chinese after-school program before coming to our school. She is very gentle, warm, and positive when interact with children.
Jin Yue
Jin laoshi grown up in North China. She attended colleges in both South Korean and Canada:
Family science of Social Science bachelor’s degree – SungKyunKwan University in South Korean
Early Childhood Education Diploma –George Brown College in Canada
After graduating, she worked with children of preschool, kindergarten, school age in public school. Additionally, she was a part of West Toronto Support Service where she volunteered for seniors’ program in Toronto, Canada. Jin Laoshi moved to Portland with her husband who works at a high-teach company. Jin laoshi is currently teaching preschool, kindergarten, after school, and Saturday school classes.
Ji Yu
Yu laoshi earned her BA degree in Chia and worked there as an English Editor for educational software companies and taught as an English teacher for preschools in China. When she moved to US, she continued to teach in many schools including as the 1st Grade Teacher at Olympia Chinese School and Lincoln Elementary After-School Class. She also worked as Translation Service Provider for King County Elections Division and Chinese Course Online Curriculum Developer for GLOSS–RMHS, Inc.
Yu laoshi joined OHCS in 2015 when she relocated to Portland. She believes each student is a unique individual with different learning style and interests. She respects her student’s uniqueness and helps them to reach their full potential.
Xin Zhou
Zhou lao shi graduated from Shenyang Institute of Engineering majoring in Economic Management. She worked in the business field before coming to the USA. Zhou laoshi taught in different schools before taking a second grade instructor position at OHCS in 2015. Her educational philosophy is: Respect each child’s individual differences and get happiness from self-discovery! Show confidence!
Ying Liu
Holding a BA from Beijing Institute of Education, Liu laoshi has been teaching Chinese since 1989. She has taught many private and public schools Chinese Mandarin classes including Lincoln High School and West Sylvan. She is one of the OHCS founding teachers teaching at OHCS since 2005. She is very experienced with advanced students. She believes all her students can get very good at Mandarin as long as they keep learning and do their best.
Luo ChwannJian
Luo laoshi graduated from Taiwan National University, Chinese language and literature Deptment in 1969. Since then, he taught Chinese in high school for 35 years. After retiring, Luo laoshi moved to Portland to stay close to his children. He joined OHCS in 2005 when the school was established. He was very excited that he could continue to pass on his knowledge to the next generation in US and help his students to improve their language skills. He is a great resource for the school, and he is very well respected by parents, students, and all the instructors.
Sussan He
He laoshi holds a Master degree in Education. She taught in both China and US for more than 20 years. She loves to engage her students in fun and exciting activities while learning. She enjoys teaching and working with her students.

Guozhong Zhuang: Go Instructor
Zhuang laoshi holds a Ph. D. of Computer Sciences, from Purdue University. He is ranked AGA 6 dan, and has more than 23 years of playing experince. His students win numerous rewards from Go Tournaments each year.
Li-jian Liu: Chinese Painting instructor
Liu laoshi has more than fifty years of Chinese painting experience. She is very good at drawing since she was a child, and she taught herself to draw as a hobby. After retiring from China, she focuses on Chinese painting and teaches the Chinese painting class at OHCS. She loves to show her students how to draw animals, plants, landscaping, and people with Chinese ink and brush.
Qi Chu: Folk Dance instructor
Chu laoshi has been a dancer since a very young age. She joined OHCS in 2005 when the school was established. Since then, she has been teaching folk dance class. Her dance is very elegant and graceful. Her students love to dance with her. When they perform in the community culture events, they always get great compliments.
Xing wang: Chinese Calligraphy instructor
Wang laoshi has more than 40 years of Chinese Calligraphy experience. He is very patient with children. He loves to pass his skill to the younger generation.
